Randwick GC Round 8

HORSES FOR COURSES

Today we travelled to Royal Randwick for the CHP Golfers Handicap for colts, fillies and geldings over the 3545 metre track, and a field of 30 starters made up of Group A, B and C classification golfers for winners, placegetters, maiden golfers and hackers with the track rating as fine and putting greens fast. The day started with the mist off the sea, just like morning trackwork and developed into a beautiful sunny if not a windy day. Course Rating was 39.

We lined up at the barrier with no clear favourite heading the betting , and no SP on course, the closest we have is a ”RP”, with Ricardo having the closest initials, and no TOTE  , but Joe Oriti  possibly having the most “T”s and “O”s in his name to warrant a mention, all bets were off. I did hear of one bet by Troy Wilks offering 300 / 1 to Michael Smith about him winning the day.

As we lined up at the barrier, Group 1 got the jump on every-one and led all others to the bend, into the straight and to the finish line and were never headed although Group 2 moved closer but could not gain on the group in front. Fortunately this was a handicap event and was closely contested and not until the last group crossed the finish line, you could put down your glasses and with the developed print required to declare the winner and placegetters for the CHP RSL Golfers Handicap for 2ND May, 2010. . With correct weight semaphored, the presentation could now take place

The Stableford winner was sashed  and handicap slashed by the “Chairman of the Bored” and the “Big Cardboard Cheques presented” to 1st  Micheal Smith on 44 points,(back 9 had a wipe, no 3 pointers ,lots of 4’s for 27 points and hit Les Frost on the 8th) from Joe Oriti  2nd on 43 points, Gary Morrison 3rd also on 42 points, Ron Williamson  4th on 40 points on a countback from Harry Vertsonis  5th   also on 40 points

Champagne corks popped but not sprayed around in the club house by the winners, as we’re only allowed to throw golf balls at the nearest the pins, longest drive winners etc with- in the clubhouse

The results of the Matchplay Semi-Finals, were Ron Williamson  over Robert McDougall   4/2 and Troy Wilks over Michael McVicar  2/1.
