4th of July is Independence Day in America and here at Marrickville, we stood alone and independent as we start the CHP Golf Club Championships with the game being transferred from Bankstown G.C. because they wanted to charge us $60.00 each. 36 players started the three rounds of the championships this year and who will emerge as the Top Cat’s in the three CATegories?
The Contestants from CHP.Hoagy’s Alley are in order TC (Tomison Craig), Fancy(Fonseca),Benny(Barter), Brain (Kylie, the Teacher Tyler), Choo Choo(Mel,Thomas The Tank) and Spook (Wilks)with Officer Malcolm Tyler, Sorry, Officer Dibble keeping the order around his beat.
The leaders emerging on top of each CATegory on Day One, earning a saucer of (Kahlua and) milk and were : A Grade; Sione Mahe 67, Dave Stewart 69, John Kottaridis 69

16th Hole Disasters:The shots that don’t purred as they left the club face and came to earth with a splash was Craig’s four shots off the 16th tee straight into the river for a 16, Michael McVIcar’s shot skimming the ball across the river about 10 skips before sinking to the depths and John Crowhurst’s shot straight into the tree and ricocheting straight back at him from 6 metres and having to jump clear 11th Hole Bunker: Troy’s shot skimmed across the fairway ,ran through bunker, out onto the green for the nearest the pin and earned a bowl of (Bailey’s Irish) cream . Some shots today were just trash and we were all guilty and scoured the bottom of the rubbish bins in the alley(several of my shots were in this class, maybe class is not the right word) or was our mind on the catnap after the game.
Today’s Stroke Competition winners were Joanne Kinkead,1st on 93 nett 52, Kylie Tyler, 2nd on 101 nett 53, in a count-back for 3rd ,4th and 5th was Melody Thomas 101 nett 56, Ewen Johnson 75 nett 56, and Edith McVicar 97 nett 56 . Well done Girls and Ewen and also Asha Asawa was 7th
