19/03/2008

Jan - March 2008

2008 started off at the Georges River course, which is improving every time we go, but was very wet underfoot due to torrential rain the day before.  Nevertheless, the golf was good, except for Glen Watson’s tee shot at the 9th that failed to reach the lady’s tee.  I am sure things improved after that.  We also had a few new players join us this year: A very warm welcome to Dick Graham, Michael Smith and young Kylie Tyler.  In addition John Crowhurst has rejoined the golf group after a year off.  He is hitting the ball very well and I am sure the handicapper will catch up to John soon.  The results for the day were: Greg Parsell on 34, a count back from Keith Johnson and in third was Roger Harriman just beating Steve Shepherd on 30 points.  There were very few nearest the pins because of the wet conditions.  Nevertheless Roger Harriman and Bob Connell won at the 3rd; Keith Johnson at the 9th; Roger again and Mal Tyler at the 14th; and Dick Graham at the 16th.  The longest drive was won by Sione Mahe and Daniel Stevenson the 4th.   There was do drive and pitch on the day.

If we thought Georges River was wet, we were in for a lot worse on our second outing.  Buckets of rain before we started, but luckily not much while we were playing-unless of course you were one of the last 2 groups!  The poor weather didn’t seem to bother Noa Palu who just pipped Sione Mahe both finishing on 38 points.  In third place was Dave Stewart on 37.  The nearest the pins went to Sione Mahe and Bob Connell at the 6th; Sione again, Steve Shepherd and Harry Vertsonis at the 9th; Sam Tizzone at the 10th; and Noa Palu, Ron Williamson and Mal Tyler at the 16th.  The longest drives went to John Kottaridis, Kieran Nulty and Kylie Tyler and the drive and pitch prize went to Noa Palu.

February 17 saw us return to Royal Marrickville.  The day belonged to the women!!  Mary Harriman won the day’s event with a very impressive 43 stableford points.  In second spot was Edith McVicar on 42 point with Noa Palu at a distant 3rd with 35 points.  The other half of the Harriman’s (Roger) won most of the nearest the pins.  He took the prize at the 3rd, 9th, and the 11th holes.  Roger also won the Drive and Pitch.  It is worth noting that Roger was in the last group and therefore was in charge of collecting the markers!!  Other winners were Kieran Nulty at the 3rd, Paul Waban at the 11th, and John Parsell at the 18th.  We had three winners in the longest drive competition.  Dave Stewart (A grade), Daniel Stevenson (B grade) and Mal Tyler (C grade).  Well done to all the winners.  It is also worth noting that Noa Palu had an eagle at the 4th hole.  An excellent result, well done.

Barnwell Park was the venue for the 2nd March.  Noa Palu continues to impress.  He won the day with 43 points.  This is the second win he has had in the last 3 rounds.  In second place was Dave Stewart who played very consistently all day and finished with 40 points.  There was a count back for third spot with Steve Shepherd just getting his nose in front of John Kottaridis.  Bad luck John and congratulations to the winners. The nearest the pins went to Keith Johnson, Bob Connell and Bill Fonseca at the 3rd; Ron Williamson and Mal Tyler at the 8th; Dave Stewart, Eric Osman and Ewen Johnson at the 13th; and Keith Johnson again at the 18th.  The Longest Drives went to Noa Palu, Sol Pedersen and Harry Vertsonis.  The Drive and Pitch was won by John Kottaridis and Kieran Nulty.
