The Golf Club honoured our “Club Member of the Year” nomination, Les Frost at the Annual Night at the CHP RSL last Saturday night, 15th May. Les has been a long standing member of the club for nearly 30 years & a Golf member for over 10 years, Les is a fit bloke and swims 30 laps of Roselands pool, a few days a week and never rides in a golf cart preferring to stride out leaving many younger members in his wake. 24 members & partners celebrated with Les on his night, along with our singing & dancing Director of the RSL, John “Twinkle-Toes”Crowhurst dancing with the 70’s /80’s theme. The
food fantastic, free drinks & the entertainment was a J OK butt & a little revealing. A great night for all
Today we played at Kareela Golf Course in a bush setting in the clearing at the bottom of the hill of the car park & there we met up with one of the locals, a ”Shepherd” from Como, they called him Steve, who welcomed us to his native land, while some of our group partook in the traditional smoking ceremony before the start of our bushwalk. Our trek took us up into the foothills, across the tablelands, following the water course to the waterfall, and a Billabong below before descending to the river, mangroves and mudflats, where some of us played in the white sands and puddles around the lush greens & paddocks before returning to our muster point. The Shepherd invited all back to his Homestead at Como, saying the jumbucks will be alright under the shade of the Coolabah trees.
We spotted a Grumpy Old Swag-i-man(Harriman) at the Billabong, with the Billy(Fonseca) boy. Then down came the Shepherd sitting in his Holden Ute, down came the committee men 1, 2 ,3 and said is that a jumbuck in your golf & tucker bag you’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me and wash away your sorrows with a BBQ and a beer or two”, So up jumped the Harriman and drove until he reached the Como site, you’ll never catch me in the Championships said he, so the host may be heard as you pass on by that Como site, you’ll come a drinking a “Blue Tongue” with me. Thanks Steve & Daylene.
32 travellers made the journey but with no sherpa’s or pack mules available and a complete lack of motorised vehicles to carry their selected clubs, food and water( a canoe would have been handy), thus curtailing a few members from participating in our journey today, or was it the memory of the much needed rain drops of years past that put a damper on them. We didn’t lose anyone one on our expedition as in past years(remember Melody & Laurie) and the weather today was again wet and soggy and weather gear was required by all, gum boots may have been appropriate than soft spikes. Today’s Stableford winners were Joanne Kinkead 1st on 37 points, from Steve Shepherd, 2nd on 36 points in a count-back from Edith McVicar, 3rd also on 36 points, John Parsell 4th on a count-back on 35 points from Raj Asawa 5th also 35 points. Also today we welcomed Asha Asawa to golf ,Raj’s wife.
