Passionate about our local community, our Club has given more than $399,793 to schools, sporting and community groups, youth programmes and charities. We are heavily focused on our own neighbourhood so those local and in need have been a high priority.
Schools are where it all begins with the children who are our future. One of our most special educational institutions is Wangee Park School, which is dedicated to educating and providing support, care and a stimulating learning environment to students who have severe and multiple disabilities. Our Club’s contributions have enabled the school to employ a much needed physiotherapist for the children.
We also support a large range of local sporting groups from a diverse spectrum of sports. Canterbury Junior Rugby Union Club is one to which our Club is particularly committed. “We would struggle without the generous sponsorship from Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club, which has provided funding for coaching courses, team jerseys and end of year presentation prizes,” said Tevita Katafono, Club President of Canterbury Junior Rugby Union Club.
Our Club is dedicated to providing assistance and ongoing financial support to community organisations. As CEO Dean Thomas notes, “We believe we should all do all we can to make our community a better place. Our Club is proud of the partnerships we have established with the recipients as well as the long-term relationships we have nurtured with our community leaders.”
Since 2007, our Club has also lent a hand and vital funding to Men’s Sheds, a national organisation that helps combat men’s health isolation, loneliness and depression. The Canterbury Men’s Shed is a group of men, aged 55+ who gather regularly to swap yarns, work on community projects like making and repairing furniture, toys and craft items that are then often donated to community outreaches and hospitals.
Loaves and Fishes Free Restaurant, established by Rev. Bill Crews’ Exodus Foundation, provides free healthy and nutritious meals six days a week to Sydney’s poor and homeless daily. We are proud to have made a donation that made it possible to feed up to 2,400 people in need.
Club President, Neville Brown, underlines our Club’s passion in giving something back to our local community organisations, “Community groups are part of the fabric of our society. These groups contribute so much to our local area. They do wonderful word and it gives us great satisfaction to support them.”
