CHPRSL SUCCESSFUL TENDERER FOR CAMPERDOWN BOWLING CLUB SITE

In August 2014, Marrickville Council confirmed Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club1  is the successful tenderer for the former Camperdown Bowling Club site at 31A Mallett Street, Camperdown.

Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club, which has been operating since 1947, has a long history of supporting the community, contributing more than $2.6 million to community groups in the inner west over the last 5 years. It became the preferred tenderer for the former bowling club site in January 2014.
It established Camperdown Project Pty Ltd (‘CP’) as a standalone, wholly owned subsidiary to operate the site. Camperdown Project has been working closely with Marrickville Council to finalise the lease agreement for the site.

On the occasion of the public announcement, Camperdown Project’s spokesperson and Chief Executive Officer of Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Club, Dean Thomas said, “We’re thrilled and privileged to have the opportunity to revive a valued community facility, ensuring that it becomes a much-needed community-friendly space as well as a vibrant food and beverage operation.”

Significant investment: $1 million +
“We’re confident that our allocation of at least $1 million2  towards the revitalisation of the former Camperdown Bowling club site will reinvigorate and enhance Mallett Street and the Camperdown Park precinct3 ” Thomas said.

Camperdown Project is looking forward to working closely with Marrickville Council with a view to filing a Development Application later this year.

Community liaison
Camperdown Project also announced its intention to keep the community informed about plans and progress and that it intends to arrange a number of ‘community meetings’ for interested residents. These meetings will be a forum in which Camperdown Project can present its vision for the site and hear from interested residents to better appreciate their perspectives, prior to finalising and submitting the DA for Council approval.

Some of the elements of the proposal that will be covered at these meetings include: converting the bowling greens into an urban farm and mixed-use community space; spaces for event, meetings and wellness activities; a casual children’s play area and a quality food and beverage operation. CP’s vision for the former bowling club site is subject to DA approval, licences and ministerial approval.

Commenting on the announcement, Marrickville Council Mayor Jo Haylen said, "Camperdown Project's vision for the former bowling club site is hugely impressive and exciting. We look forward to seeing plans for the site take shape to ensure it revitalises a wonderful community asset that locals will be proud of.”
